📖 Introduction

Brunel University London is a public research university located in the Uxbridge area of London, England. It was founded in 1966 and named after the Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. In June 1966, Brunel College of Advanced Technology was awarded a royal charter and became Brunel University. The University conceived a brand of education, and later research, which was overwhelmingly geared towards the needs of industry and, echoing the spirit and vision of its namesake Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it did so with flair and rigor. Brunel's ambition was to equip students for the world of work and to address society’s challenges on a global scale. The challenges have changed, but the University's aims are as innovative and ambitious as they always were – to develop research and educational programs informed by, and tailor-made for, those who benefit; and to give students the academic education and personal skills needed to become a success in the real world.

Best: facilities for my course, lecturers and tutors, being pushed on my course, can get to central London Organisation and structure of course and uni admin could be improved. Given the small size of the uni student life could be more varied but is OK. Best: lecturers and tutors - great advice and taught content. Feel pushed to work hard and do my best by assignments. Extent of workshop facilities and other facilities very useful. Would definitely recommend Brunel for design. Each year I've studied deadline dates have been rearranged, meaning the spacing out of deadlines is never as good as it could be, adding a lot of stress and meaning I can't do as much for assignments as I could because of considerations for the next deadline. Sometimes feels that each year's assignments (in terms of requirements and type) could be planned out better in a holistic way. Could be more focus on developing a good portfolio earlier. Could be taught how to use software used in industry earlier or more thoroughly.

What stood out to me from the beginning of my experience with Brunel is how helpful and accommodating the university is towards its students, in every aspect. I have attended other universities in the UK as an international student and never felt as welcome and supported as I have at Brunel - even at top ranking universities, I felt like I was treated as an ATM machine rather than a young human being in an unfamiliar territory who is hoping for guidance and support and a university that cares about me. In terms of improvement, the campus could benefit from an indoor swimming pool, and the campus accommodation contracts should not be so rigid considering that there are different intakes and not all courses run the standard September-September duration. The Students Union elections need to figure out a different election system as winners are always from places that make up the majority of the student body, i.e. students are voting on favouritism instead of merit. The LLM course is well designed and although it is hard to catch up on the required reading if a student is not very disciplined at work-life balance, there is always adequate materials shared to catch up on during the breaks. There is a rule that if more than 22 students choose a module, it is only offered online. Students should be given the option to choose how they want to attend when choosing that module before making this decision, because alhtough 22+ students took the module, maybe just 10 want to attend it on campus and should be able to since international students (who make up the most of the cohort) come all this way to the UK to experience university life. This way the 10 people who really want a class on campus can have it there while the 12+ who want to attend it online can do so. Uxbridge is fantastic because it is neither a sleepy rural town nor crazy expensive and soulless like central London. The cost of living is not bad considering this is still London. The people are definitely much friendlier and nicer than other parts of London. The campus is huge, possibly the biggest in London, and this is only possible because we are not in central. Campus life is therefore very vibrant. The only downside to location is some parts of Uxbridge, including around campus, are not very safe at night. While it's still much much safer than say East or South London, some caution is advised.
