Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) is a public language university located in the northwestern suburbs of Beijing, 12 km from Tian'anmen, the center of the city, and was founded in 1962. The BLCU campus covers an area of 38 hectares, with a floor space of 240,000 square meters. BLCU is the only international university in China with its main task set at teaching the Chinese language and culture to non-Chinese students and serves as the center for teaching Chinese and the study of the Chinese language.
Beijing Language and Culture University's main task is to teach the Chinese language and culture to foreign students. As well as teaching Chinese, it also undertakes the tasks of teaching foreign languages, computer science, and technology, finance and accountancy to Chinese students. It provides training courses for teachers who specialize in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and it offers pre-departure language training to candidates intending to live and work abroad.
BLCU has the longest history, the largest scope, and the most qualified teaching faculties of its kind in the area of teaching the Chinese language and culture to foreigners. BLCU distinguishes itself by its unique cultural atmosphere of diversity, which attracts a large number of students from both home and abroad. Since the founding of the University over 40 years ago, more than 60,000 students from over 160 countries and regions have stepped out confidently into the world from here. Some have become distinguished diplomats, sinologists and journalists; 14 have worked as foreign ambassadors to China and more than 30 are diplomats working in the embassies to China.
BLCU is home to advanced research and teaching in languages, cultures, arts and social sciences. From teaching the Chinese language to speakers of other languages to international politics and business, BLCU brings ideas and brilliant minds together, inspiring global communications and exchanges with real impact today and in the future.
As home to the world’s largest Chinese language program for international students, BLCU has trained about 200,000 international students from 183 countries and regions since its founding in 1962. There are more than 8,000 international students studying in BLCU every year, while there are only 2,000 beds in the campus dormitories. Places are limited and students are advised to book early to ensure a place (at least 3 months in advance). For those who book early, we can guarantee a dormitory.
