Berlin, Germany
The Master's in Data Science at Free University of Berlin is a 2 year long program for international students taught in English.
The Free University of Berlin or Freie Universität Berlin is a public research university in Berlin, Germany. It is one of eleven elite German research universities in the German Universities Excellence Initiative and is consistently ranked among Germany's top ten universities overall, with particular strengths in political science and humanities. It is recognized as a leading university in the international university tables. Freie Universität Berlin was founded on December 4, 1948, by students, scholars, and scientists with the support of the American allied forces and politicians in Berlin. The move was sparked by the persecution faced by students who took a critical eye of the system at the former Universität Unter den Linden, at that time located in the Soviet sector of the divided city. Students and academics wanted to be free to pursue their learning, teaching, and research activities at Freie Universität, without being subject to political influence.
Freie Universität Berlin is a leading research institution. It is one of the 13 German universities being funded through the German government’s Excellence Strategy and is part of the only University Consortium of Excellence, the Berlin University Alliance. The four Berlin partners – Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin – submitted a joint proposal in the Excellence Strategy entitled Crossing Boundaries toward an Integrated Research Environment. The four institutions’ long-term goal is nothing less than to turn Berlin into an integrated research environment and one of Europe’s leading research hubs.
The various areas of focus in the research conducted at Freie Universität are organized into various structures, including interdisciplinary focus areas, excellence clusters, collaborative research centers, and research centers. Through the Dahlem Research School, Freie Universität Berlin promotes the training and development of junior scholars and scientists. The university maintains more than 100 international partnerships with universities worldwide. About 17 percent of its students come from abroad.
