Master's in Asian Studies

The Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn or, simply, University of Bonn is an elite public research university located in Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was founded in its present form as the Rhein-Universität (English: Rhine University) on 18 October 1818 by Frederick William III, as the linear successor of the Kurkölnische Akademie Bonn (English: Academy of the Prince-elector of Cologne) which was founded in 1777. Since 2019, the University of Bonn is one of only 11 German Universities of Excellence and the only German university with six Clusters of Excellence. With a strong record of disciplinary excellence and a number of Transdisciplinary Research Areas, the University of Bonn supports the achievement of excellence - since 1818.

A strong emphasis on its research focus lies at the heart of the Asian Studies degree program. Students develop critical and reflective as well as practical skills in a chosen specialty from Oriental and Asian studies. This particularly includes dealing with sources in the original language. Besides acquiring scientific expert knowledge aligned with current international standards, students are enabled to practically apply, critically evaluate and creatively develop their skills on their own account. The Department of Oriental and Asian Studies offers the following specializations: Arabic Studies and Translation, Chinese Language and Translation, Islamic Archaeology, Islamic Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies, Asian and Oriental Art History, Mongolian Studies, Religious Studies, Chinese Studies, South Asian Studies, Southeast Asian Studies, Tibetan Studies, Turkish History and Society as well as Economics and Society in Asia. Students can follow up on this specialized training in postgraduate and doctoral programs. In addition to the modules relevant for their specialization, students can individually add courses from the range of elective modules offered at the Department to refine their curriculum.
