French is the sixth most-spoken language in the world, utilized on every continent except Antarctica. By the year 2050, it is estimated that French will be the most commonly spoken language in the world due to population growth in sub-Saharan Africa. Speaking multiple languages is a huge advantage in a competitive job search. French is also one of the official languages of the United Nations. In this program, you will immerse yourself in the language, literature and culture of France and the Francophone world. In the French Major, with a concentration in French Translation (39 credits), students choose coursework in the French language, enhance their written and spoken communication skills, and take related translation electives to complement their General Education requirements. Many of our translation courses offer an internship or other field experience. We also offer the possibility of Study Abroad, for the academic year or with our summer program in Nice, France.
