The Leibniz University Hannover, German: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität and short forms German: Leibniz Universität Hannover and German: LUH, is a public research university located in Hanover, Germany. Founded on 2 May 1831, it is one of the largest and oldest science and technology universities in Germany. The heart of Leibniz University Hannover beats in the idyllic Welfenschloss, the Guelph Palace. The year 1879 saw the Higher Vocational School, originally founded in 1831, move into the palace. Later, the Higher Vocational School became the Königliche Technische Hochschule, the Royal College of Technology. 64 pupils first attended the Vocational School. Leibniz University Hannover is diverse and cultivated – just like our namesake, the polymath Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. The broad range of subjects at Leibniz University is entirely compatible with an overall university strategy of raising its profile, in particular of teaching and research, including the establishment and enhancement of research priority areas originating in the humanities and social sciences.
