Bachelor's in Comparative Religious Studies

The Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn or, simply, University of Bonn is an elite public research university located in Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was founded in its present form as the Rhein-Universität (English: Rhine University) on 18 October 1818 by Frederick William III, as the linear successor of the Kurkölnische Akademie Bonn (English: Academy of the Prince-elector of Cologne) which was founded in 1777. Since 2019, the University of Bonn is one of only 11 German Universities of Excellence and the only German university with six Clusters of Excellence. With a strong record of disciplinary excellence and a number of Transdisciplinary Research Areas, the University of Bonn supports the achievement of excellence - since 1818.

In the dual-subject option of the bachelor's degree program in Comparative Religious Studies students are taught the basics of religious studies methodologies and acquire the competence to apply this knowledge specifically to their occupational field or within a more research-oriented master's degree program. The required modules convey basic specialized knowledge, skills and methodologies. Students’ knowledge of theories, methodologies and religious history is optimally complemented by concrete practical contacts with local religious communities. Such contacts enable students to explore specific religions individually and deepen their knowledge and understanding of them. Students set an area of focus for themselves by their choice of elective modules. The electives, which focus on religious history, can also be aligned to the second subject of the dual-subject degree program in order to achieve synergies between the two subjects—at least to some degree. The central objective of this degree program is to provide students with basic knowledge of religious studies to an extent that will enable them to continue their studies in a research-oriented master’s degree program in religious studies or find a position where they can use the knowledge they acquired in both subjects of their bachelor’s studies. The usefulness of the contents of this dual-subject BA program for prospective employers can be increased by students’ choice of second subject.
