Bachelor's in Asian and Islamic Art History

The Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn or, simply, University of Bonn is an elite public research university located in Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was founded in its present form as the Rhein-Universität (English: Rhine University) on 18 October 1818 by Frederick William III, as the linear successor of the Kurkölnische Akademie Bonn (English: Academy of the Prince-elector of Cologne) which was founded in 1777. Since 2019, the University of Bonn is one of only 11 German Universities of Excellence and the only German university with six Clusters of Excellence. With a strong record of disciplinary excellence and a number of Transdisciplinary Research Areas, the University of Bonn supports the achievement of excellence - since 1818.

In the dual-subject degree program Asian and Islamic Art History, students learn methodologies and theories that will enable them to scientifically reflect on and extract new insights from the broad spectrum of art and architecture, the ongoing globalization of the art market, and the transcultural influences affecting the visual arts. This is an object-related science that puts objects into their cultural, social, religious and political context. The program deals with objects that mostly originate from a religious context as well as with profane and religious architecture. The core contents of the program include providing students with sound knowledge and understanding of the scientific foundations of Asian and Islamic Art History, the ability to write academically, an overview of the artworks, styles, and buildings of various geographic regions and their evolution, and sensibility for transcultural questions. In addition, students develop an understanding of the functions and meanings of artworks and architecture. They are also introduced to the topic of an extended concept of art, given an overview of the current debates in academia and society over art history and related disciplines, and they acquire the ability to exchange information, ideas, and solutions.
