International Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Tohoku University was established in the School of Engineering at Tohoku University. International Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Course is a fully English taught engineering degree program at Tohoku University organized by the division of Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering, Tohoku University. The educational goals are to foster richly creative individuals who can think originally and will lead the development and innovation of science and technology in the 21st century based on a broad perspective and deep knowledge of humans and nature. IMAC pursues the creation of science and technology which make peoples' lives better, and the globalized education through exchange with students from various countries. Prospective students will have excellent opportunities to study fundamental engineering and conduct cutting-edge research, as well as train their international sense, under the supervision of top-level researchers. Connecting to international graduate courses IMAC-U directly connects to the International Graduate Course (IMAC-G). Students who have finished 4-year undergraduate course are possible to further enroll in IMAC-G, and the high-quality research in the graduate course will lead to finally PhD. The students with excellent grades are possible to finish the 4-year undergraduate course with 3 or 3.5 years then immediately enter IMAC-G.
In 1911, Vice Minister of Education Masataro Sawayanagi, moved to Sendai to become Tohoku University’s first president. Sawayanagi firmly believed that academic research should be integrated with education. He also believed that a university should not discriminate based on class or gender. Following this principle, Tohoku University accepted graduates from technical and higher normal schools, and despite opposition from the government at that time, became Japan’s first university to admit female students in 1913. As of 2022, there are more than 1,700 international students at the university representing 90 different countries and regions. In total there are around 10,000 undergraduates, 4,000 master’s students and 2,600 doctoral students enrolled.
