The studies last four semesters. The whole programme contains more than 1200 hours of lectures, laboratory classes, workshops, seminars, and field trips. The major part of the programme offers practical workshops, the environmental lab, and lectures conducted by experts from a wide spectrum of biology and biological conservation. Moreover, there will be guest visits to innovative companies, where the students will learn about environmentally friendly technologies, and the solutions implemented there to protect the environment. The studies are intended for those who want to become specialists able to identify and evaluate the biotic components of ecosystems on a small, medium and large -geographical scale. The graduates will be able to evaluate and interpret various ecological processes, especially those that are important for making any decisions about the environment. Moreover, the graduates will be acquainted with the methods of effective teamwork (i.e. how to choose the leader, share responsibilities, and how to interpret the results of their analyses and draw conclusions in a team). The programme of the studies offers several courses which will teach the students how to find and define research problems, obtain and analyse data collected from different sources, consult with experts, use statistical methods, and interpret as well as present the results of their analyses. Besides this, the students will learn how to prepare projects to apply for financial support for the development, management, and conservation of the environment, both at the regional and transnational scale. Bioclimatology, Environmental Global Change, Chemical Lab of Water Monitoring, Ecohydrology, Mediation and Social Conflicts in Environmental Protection, Principle of Geographical Information Systems, Aquatic Management, Ecosystem Dynamics and Functions, Lab of Biomonitoring, Environmental Monitoring in Practice, Ecological State of the Lake During Restoration, Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Toxicology, Ecological Economics, Political Ecology, Sustainable Development, Environmental Microbiology, Environmental monitoring methods, Environmental modelling, Environmental virology, etc. The graduates should meet all requirements of the labour market, including institutions, scientific labs expert companies, and businesses associated with environment protection, or those focused on natural resources. Some of the acquired skills (such as classification of habitats, identification of endangered species, natural compensation, standardized environmental management systems, and evaluation services of ecosystems) will be certificated by the Department of Biology at AMU. The programme is designed for those who want to become experts in the identification and evaluation of the biotic components of ecosystems following the current rules and regulations of national and European laws. In addition to being awarded the M.Sc. degree, the graduate obtains four certificates: Certificate in Nature Compensation, Special Care Species, Economics in Environmental Protection, and Standardised Environmental Protection Policy. Many of the courses are offered in the form of workshops, field trips, and e-learning.
