📚About the Program

The doctoral study program Biophysics is intended for students who want to acquire the thorough knowledge and practical skills required to study processes in living systems at the level of molecules, cells, organs and whole organisms. For research purposes, a wide range of predominantly biophysical methods, typical of a given research field, are used. Modern methods of molecular biology and biochemistry, physiological methods and theoretical modeling are also used. At the end of 2022, the doctoral program Biophysics (formerly Biophysics) successfully completed over 70 students. The longest tradition has experimental research of plant biophysical processes, especially at the level of photosynthetic apparatus, and study of the effect of stress factors on physiological processes in plants. These experimental data are also theoretically simulated on the basis of mathematical models describing the physical nature of the processes. Because the stresses of living systems (plants, animals) are inter alia linked to the production of radical and non-radical reactive oxygen species, we are also studying these processes. The subject of our research is also the modification of nucleic acids, especially DNA, cytostatics derived from transition metal complexes (platinum, ruthenium, osmium), resolution of these modifications by cellular components (especially proteins) and repair of these modifications. We also study the structure, function and interaction of medically important proteins (e.g. Na+/K+-ATPase) at the molecular level, including the mathematical modeling of the three-dimensional structure of these molecules and their dynamics. We also deal with biomechanics and physiological acoustics of human voice, and we also study the processes of vocal vibrations in healthy and ill persons in order to improve the diagnosis of voice disorders. Last but not least, we are also studying nanomaterials for the spectroscopic detection of biomolecules. Show less
