The Norwegian University of Science and Technology is a public research university in Norway with the main campus in Trondheim and smaller campuses in Gjøvik and Ålesund. The largest university in Norway, NTNU has over 8,000 employees and thousands of students. NTNU is a young institution with a long history. The university, in its current form, was established in 1996 by the merger of six research and higher education institutions in Trondheim. The university's root goes back to 1760, with the foundation of Det Trondhiemske Selskab (Trondheim Academy), which in 1767 became the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters.

NTNU has a main profile in science and technology, a variety of programmes of professional study, and great academic breadth that also includes the humanities, social sciences, economics, medicine, health sciences, educational science, architecture, entrepreneurship, art disciplines and artistic activities.

The length of study for the master’s degree programme in informatics is 2 years with 120 credits. The programme is international and is taught in English.

O a large degree the programme is research-based and is built on knowledge, skills, and general competence from a bachelor’s degree or an engineering degree in informatics.

Four specializations
To be admitted to this master’s degree programme you must apply for admission to an elected specialization. In consultation with a student adviser and the academic supervisor you will design a plan of study adapted to your situation and interests.

Databases and search
Focuses on theories, methods, and technology for administering information. You will learn how to structure, store, and organize document-similar information, digital libraries, knowledge management, information retrieval, and multi-media.

Artificial intelligence
Among other things you will learn about knowledge-based methods, evolutionary methods, machine learning, image understanding, and the application of artificial intelligence technology.

Software systems
Focuses on interdisciplinary studies of the development and use of IT. You will learn about IT and organization development, systems development, software architecture and quality assurance.

Interaction design, gaming and learning technology
As regards interaction design, you will learn how to design graphic user interfaces and user-centred methods. In gaming technology, you will learn about the theoretical basis for computer games and how it is implemented, whereas learning technology will teach how IT may be used to support teaching.

1st year of study
The first year of study consists of advanced courses in informatics and the elected specialization, as well as the compulsory course Experts in Teams (EiT) that will provide you with practical experience in interdisciplinary cooperation.

2nd year of study
The second year of study is devoted to a preparatory project, advanced courses, and the master’s thesis, which is completed individually or in smaller groups. In many cases, the master’s thesis will be connected with research projects at the department.

Internationalization
The informatics and IT-industry is an international industry and students, therefore, are encouraged to take a semester at a university abroad to learn languages and about other cultures. In recent years our informatics students have studied at universities in Canada, Sweden, Italy, New Zealand, the USA, the UK, Singapore, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Ethiopia, Germany, Switzerland, and Australia.
