📖Introduction
Hólar University is located in Hólar, Iceland, an important historical centre of education. The first school in Hólar was founded in 1106. This long history of education at Hólar makes it one of the oldest schools in Europe. Hólar University College is a specialized higher education institution offering undergraduate and postgraduate education in three disciplines; Aquaculture and Fish Biology, Equine Studies, and Tourism Studies. Hólar is a very historical site in northern Iceland having been a seat of learning, historical, cultural and ecclesiastical importance since 1100s. The University College can trace it’s roots back to the agricultural university there in 1882. That school was granted degree awarding powers in 2003 and became Hólar University College in 2007.
The institution is an internationally recognised centre for education and research in three highly specialized fields; equine science, aqua-culture and aquatic biology, and tourism studies.
Hólar University College is a growing institution offering quality graduate and undergraduate education and a strong research programme. Hólar in Hjaltadalur is one of the Icelandic nation’s principal historical, cultural, and ecclesiastical sites. Hólar has been a place of learning through the ages, moving with the demands of each new era for education.
The name Hólar means hills. These are today covered with forest. Below the residential area are the meadows and fields of the horse breeding farm stretching to the river. The postcard image of Hólar is from the vantage point of the road home, with the cathedral and school building in the foreground. On the back of this postcard the residents of today are writing their chapter in the long history of Hólar. Most of the students and employees of Hólar University and other institutions located at Hólar live in the area with their families, forming a community of roughly 200. Hólar is a popular destination for travellers, and tourist services are operated there.
The universities’ main campus is situated at Hólar in Hjaltadalur, a valley in mid North Iceland with a community of 100-150 individuals. Hólar is one of Iceland’s most historical locations with a bishopric and educational activities dating back to 1106. Thus, as a place Hólar is deeply rooted in the past and present culture of Iceland, reflecting national self-identity and enjoying respect in the society. This provides unique cultural and political grounds for Hólar University.

The first steps are to choose the programs, pay the application fee and upload the application documents.
Once submitted to Global Admissions, we will review your application within 2-3 days and proceed to the university or ask you for further clarification
After it has been processed to the university you will receive your unique application ID from each university.
The university may contact you directly for further questions.
We will then follow up each week with the university for updates. As soon as there is any update we will let you know. If you have made other plans, decide to withdraw / change address at any time please let us know.
After you have been accepted you will receive your admissions letter electronically and asked to pay the non-refundable deposit to the university.
Once you have paid the deposit the university will issue you the admissions letter and visa form to your home country.
