The BA (Hons) Textile Design degree course at Cardiff Met will help you develop the creative, professional, and research skills needed to work across this diverse and growing industry. You will experience a broad range of textiles techniques and styles, including Print and Pattern, Knit and Weave, Stitch and Fabric Manipulation and Mixed Media. This course will encourage you to become an industry change-maker, combining innovative techniques to create unique and enduring textile products for the future. Textile Design at Cardiff Met is ideal for you if you love colour, pattern, drawing, textures, materials, and making. You’ll discover how to apply your designs to interiors, ceramics, clothing, furnishings, gift wrap, cards, accessories, and even public spaces. You’ll explore key themes in Textile Design such as sustainability, manufacturing, and material culture, all while developing your own style and personal textiles language. Our industry contacts mean that we can provide you with the chance to take on live client briefs and internship opportunities, preparing you for your future career. 📖Program Curriculum

Year One

Subject: Process Matters - 40 credits

Explore the fundamentals of Textiles through structured and decorated materials such as fabric manipulation, stitch, screen printing, dye and fashion and/or interiors markets.

Subject: Design Matters - 20 credits

Learn essential professional design processes and technologies used in industry, such as trend forecasting, mood-boards, colour theory, designing collections, and look-books.

Field One: Collaborate - 20 credits*

Work with students from other disciplines to discover new techniques that enrich your subject.

Constellation: Concept - 40 credits

Explore the theories and histories that underpin your creative practice. Learn how to develop your academic research skills and critical thinking.

Year Two

Subject: Innovation - 40 credits

Take risks and experiment with the potential of Textile Design: break the rules and explore material and surface innovation.

Field Two: Explore - 40 credits*

Explore outside of your immediate discipline to discover new thinking and ideas that relate back to your subject. Work collaboratively to discover real-world scenarios and understand where you fit into the bigger picture. Projects include live briefs, work placements, or starting your own business, for example.

Constellation: Critique - 40 credits

Critique literature, journals and exhibitions, and hone your ability to put your design practice into context. You’ll also have opportunities to interact with students and staff and research deeper into your areas of interest.

Year Three

Subject: Consolidate - 40 credits

Consolidate your learning with the production of a highly considered and professional body of work, by applying an effective and individual design methodology to your outcome.

Field Three: Exposure - 40 credits

Direct your own final major project resulting in an exhibition of your work. Launch your future career within the textile industry.

Constellation: Contribution - 40 credits

Research and complete your final theoretical project. Choose from a dissertation; artefact and critical text; creative enterprise research proposal; technical research report; or conference paper assignment.

Entry Requirements

You are not eligible to apply to this program because:

The minimum age is 18.

English fluency is required.
You need to be either:
- A native English speaker
- Studied a degree in English before
- Can demonstrate a high level of English
- Having an English certificate such as IELTS level 6 or TOEFL 95 and above is an advantage.

Minimum education level: High School.

The program is competitive, you need to have a high grades of Average A, 70%, or a high GPA.

Application process:

Applying Online is simple in just a few steps. More information is available here.

The first steps are to choose the programs, pay the application fee and upload the application documents.

Once submitted to Global Admissions, we will review your application within 2-3 days and proceed to the university or ask you for further clarification

After it has been processed to the university you will receive your unique application ID from each university.

The university may contact you directly for further questions.

We will then follow up each week with the university for updates. As soon as there is any update we will let you know. If you have made other plans, decide to withdraw / change address at any time please let us know.

After you have been accepted you will receive your admissions letter electronically and asked to pay the non-refundable deposit to the university.

Once you have paid the deposit the university will issue you the admissions letter and visa form to your home country.
